It’s Fourth Quarter, Now What? A Guide for Creatives, Leaders, and Change-Makers

You’re in the first week of the fourth quarter, now what?

The final quarter of the year is here, and for Creatives, Leaders, and Change-Makers, it’s a crucial time for reflection, planning, and action. As you approach the end of the year, it’s essential to make the most of these last few months to set the stage for a successful year ahead. Think of this as A Guide for Creatives, Leaders, and Change-Makers. In this guide, I’ll explore what to do on a daily basis, which tasks to focus on, how to engage with your team and audience, and how to promote and plan effectively during this pivotal time.

Imagine a long-distance race, like a marathon. Similarly, your business journey is like this race, and each quarter of the year represents a different leg of the race. The fourth quarter is like the final stretch of the marathon.

In the beginning, during the first three quarters, you were pacing yourself, setting a rhythm, and overcoming various challenges. These early stages were crucial for building momentum and endurance. You had to strategize, adapt, and ensure you had the resources and stamina to keep going.

But as you enter the fourth quarter, it’s comparable to the last few miles of the marathon.

Similarly, in the business world, the fourth quarter represents the homestretch of the year. It’s the time when you can see the year-end goals you set at the beginning of the race. You may need to push a little harder, dig a bit deeper, and make that final sprint to achieve those objectives. It’s a critical phase for closing deals, meeting revenue targets, and achieving annual milestones.

Habits and Routines

Fourth quarter looks nothing like any other time of year. As John Brubaker explains, “…it pays to finish your fourth quarter strong.”  While it is a time for celebrations, you can still keep the momentum going to keep growing. With this in mind, consider the tips below for your habits and routines.

  1. Set Clear Priorities: Start each day by identifying your top priorities. What are the most important tasks that will contribute to your goals? Focus on these first.
  2. Time Blocking: Allocate specific blocks of time for essential tasks, including strategic planning, creative work, and team meetings. Stick to your schedule as closely as possible.
  3. Review Goals: Regularly review your year-end goals and make adjustments as needed to stay on track. What is a stretch goal but also a realistic one you can achieve by year-end?
  4. Reflect and Journal: Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your accomplishments, challenges, and learnings. Journaling can help you gain clarity and insight. You’d be surprised of the insights gained by getting your thoughts down on paper.

Team Engagement and Direction

If you have a team (paid employees, contractors, a board, volunteers) or even if you’re a team of one. It helps to consider how your team plays a part in the process and how you celebrate them along the way.

  1. Team Meetings: Schedule team meetings to align everyone with the year-end goals. Discuss feedback, challenges, and upcoming projects. Consider having meetings once per week and using productivity tools such as Slack, Teams, or Monday.com for progress updates.
  2. Delegate Wisely: Delegate tasks that others on your team can handle, freeing up your time for high-impact activities. Delegating is an incredible way to build trust, empower your team and free up your time.
  3. Provide Support: Ensure your team has the resources and support they need to excel in their roles.
  4. Celebrate Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your team’s achievements, both big and small. Positive reinforcement can boost morale and motivation.

Audience Engagement and Promotion

Above all, you can’t have fourth quarter without your clients. I like to think of fourth quarter as the ultimate time of service and support. Although schedules can be full, with the right planning, systems and automation, things can still go quite smoothly. As Alexandra York shares, “for some entrepreneurs, the surge in profits can provide extra cash that they can invest back into their companies.

  1. Content Strategy: Develop a content strategy for the remainder of the year. What valuable content can you share with your audience?
  2. Engage on Social Media: Interact with your audience on social media platforms. Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and share relevant content.
  3. Email Marketing: Use email marketing to keep your audience informed about your year-end initiatives, promotions, or events.
  4. Webinars and Workshops: Consider hosting webinars or workshops related to your expertise. These can help you connect with your audience and showcase your knowledge. If you’re a Leader or Change-Maker in the nonprofit space, this is your time to drum up excitement about your Giving Tuesday and End of Year Giving campaigns.

  1. Annual Review: Conduct a thorough review of the year, analyzing what worked and what didn’t. Use these insights to inform your plans for the next year.
  2. Set New Goals: Based on your review, set clear and achievable goals for the upcoming year. Break them down into quarterly or monthly objectives.
  3. Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Review your financials and allocate resources for the next year. This includes budgeting for marketing, operations, and growth initiatives.
  4. Networking: Attend industry events or virtual conferences to expand your network and gather fresh ideas for the future.

Be undeniably good. No marketing effort or social media buzzword can be a substitute for that. — Anthony Volodkin, founder of Hype Machine

Just like in a marathon, you’ll rely on the strategies, endurance, and preparation you’ve built up throughout the year. You’ll make strategic moves, capitalize on opportunities, and leverage the momentum you’ve gained.

The fourth quarter is where champions are made, and the results of your year-long effort come into focus. It’s a time to stay focused, stay committed, and give it your all. And as you cross the finish line at the end of the year, you’ll feel the satisfaction of a race well-run and the anticipation of a new race to begin in the year ahead.

By establishing daily routines, providing clear direction to your team, engaging with your audience, promoting your work, and planning strategically, you can make the most of this critical time. Remember that success is often the result of consistent, intentional effort, and the fourth quarter is your chance to shine. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s make these last few months count!
